Erode: More than 20 women blocked the Puliampatti-Nambiyur state highway near Gobichettipalayam here on Wednesday to protest inordinate delay in drinking water supply.
K Palaniammal, of Karapady village, said they were not supplied drinking water for more than a week. “When we approached officials on Monday, they refused to provide any reason for not supplying drinking water for such a long time.We have been facing similar situation since April.”
When alerted, Nambiyur union chairman Palanisamy reached the spot with Karapady panchayat officials and told the protestors that the drinking water distribution was disrupted because of malfunctioning of an electric motor. He assured them that the issue would be resolved by evening. The protestors subsequently withdrew the road blockade, which brought the traffic to a standstill for an hour.
The officials resolved the issue by 3pm and distributed water to the Karapa.
