Coimbatore: A delegation of officials led by city corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran inspected the Siruvani dam in Palakkad district in Kerala on Saturday following allegations of irregularities in the water release. The dam is one of the main drinking water sources for the city.
The delegation comprised Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board chief engineer Chellamuthu and executive engineer (Siruvani dam) Meera. The team held discussions with the engineers with the Kerala Irrigation Department and inspected the water level in the dam and outflow.
After the inspection, the corporation commissioner said that the water level in the dam stood at 41.82ft on the day and 25 million litres of water was being released from it per day. He said the inflow to the dam was also satisfactory.
The Kerala Irrigation Department hasn’t been allowing the water level in the dam to cross the 45ft mark because of safety concerns, he said. The dam’s full storage capacity is 49.53ft.
Prabakaran said they were planning to carry out maintenance work at the Siruvani reservoir. In this regard, the Kerala government has sent a letter to the dam safety authority in Pune. “I have spoken to the technical committee in Pune to expedite the process. They will inspect the dam and suggest methods to maintain the same. After carrying out the repair work, the water storage capacity will be increased.”
