COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) has been intensifying pending work at the newly constructed state of the art MLCP (Multi-Level Car Parking) on the DB Road and is planning to hand over the MLCP to a contractor.
The full-fledged MLCP will be opened for motorists very soon.
Under the Cities Mission, the CCMC has constructed the multi-level car parking on the DB Road at a cost of Rs 41.67 crore. The four-storey building has a capacity to accommodate 320 cars (each floor has a capacity of 80 cars). Around 60 cars can be parked on the ground floor.
According to sources, the corporation failed to provide a huge amount to the building contractor who built the MLCP. So, the building contractor allegedly failed to complete work on hydraulic lift facilities. The MLCP has not been functioning properly for more than a year.
Corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran said the dispute between the contractor and the civic body would be rectified soon. “Pending work at the MLCP will be completed soon. We are planning to hand over the MLCP to a contractor after the upcoming council meeting. The MLCP will function round the clock. The corporation is mainly focusing on surface parking and on street and off street parking now,” said Prabakaran.
The CCMC has been operating the car parking only on the ground floor and vacant places located in front of the MLCP.
As of now, the corporation has been collecting Rs 30 per car for one-hour parking and collecting Rs 10 for every additional one hour.
The local body has been collecting Rs 60 for four hours parking, Rs 80 for six hours, Rs 140 for 12 hours, Rs 200 for 18 hours and Rs 260 for 24 hours. People, who park their cars for a month, should pay Rs 3,540 (including 18% of GST).
People visiting RS Puram for purchase are using the MLCP. People who are working at banks and other private companies are also using the parking facilities.
