In a recent development in NEET row, the Centre has submitted an affidavit to the Supreme Court. The Centre told the Supreme Court that it would not be rational to scrap the entire examination, as reported by news agency ANI. It also emphasised that there were no large-scale irregularities in the exam, which 24 lakh students took. The Centre argued that, in the absence of substantial evidence pointing to a large-scale breach of confidentiality, it would be irrational to scrap the entire exam. 

Scrapping the exam entirely would “seriously jeopardize” the lakhs of honest candidates who attempted the question paper in 2024, the Centre tells the Supreme Court.

The Centre has announced that the CBI has been tasked with investigating the full scope of allegations, including conspiracy, cheating, impersonation, and breach of trust.

In its affidavit, the Centre affirmed that the Union of India is dedicated to ensuring that all competitive examinations are conducted in a fair and transparent manner.

“The Union of India duly appreciates that the confidentiality of the question papers is the utmost priority in any examination and that if due to some criminality at the behest of some criminal elements, the confidentiality has been breached, the Union of India submits that the said person must be dealt sternly and with the full force of law to ensure that they are punished,” affidavit reads.

The Supreme Court is set to hear a series of pleas concerning the controversial NEET-UG exam on July 8. These pleas include allegations of irregularities in the exam conducted on May 5 and requests for the exam to be held again. According to the cause list for July 8, uploaded on the apex court’s website, a bench comprising Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Manoj Misra will hear the batch of 26 petitions.
