THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala may be ‘God’s own country’, but for guest workers, it’s a dog’s life out there. At least, for Shyam Sundar, the expression has been true, quite literally! The 37-year-old migrant worker from Bengal was found living in a kennel, and even paying Rs 500 as monthly rent!
A daily wager, Sundar sought shelter in a kennel on a house compound in Piravom South in Ernakulam district due to financial constraints. As news spread, police visited the spot and took Sundar for a medical checkup.
However, cops said no case had been filed against the landowner as the worker said that he preferred to stay in the kennel on his own.
Sundar opted for the tiny space as he could not afford the Rs 3,000 monthly rent he was earlier paying for a house nearby.
However, taking note of media reports, state’s labour minister Vasudevan Sivankutty has sought a report from the labour commissioner.
