THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The tussle between Kerala’s LDF government and governor Arif Mohammed Khan came to a head on Wednesday with the state cabinet deciding to bring an ordinance to strip the governor of the chancellor’s post. A CMO press note said the ordinance aims to appoint eminent academics as vice chancellors of the state’s universities.
The governor is unlikely to acquiesce and in interviews to select TV channels hinted that he would not hesitate to refer the matter to the President. If that happens, it could trigger another crisis as the state assembly won’t be able to pass the bill until the President acts.
The government seems intent to use the governor’s possible non-cooperation to trigger protests against him and the Union government with the support of non-BJP state governments. LDF’s main constituent CPM plans to hold a meet of representatives of non-BJP governments in Delhi to chart out strategies against “recalcitrant” governors. Uniting them would be a challenge because KPCC president K Sudhakaran said Congress will strongly oppose the LDF move to remove the governor as chancellor.
