Erode: More than 1 crore worth of hardware materials were destroyed in a major fire that broke out at a hardware store in the city on Thursday.
More than 50 firefighters and 10 fire tenders were deployed to douse the fire, which was brought under control after a four-hour-long operation.
Around 9.30 am, workers at the shop, ‘Bharani Hardware’, noticed thick smoke billowing out of the shop and immediately ran out.They informed fire and rescue services and the shop owner V Ravanan, 59.
“Hardware items, including plastic pipes, were destroyed. Fortunately, the fire was put off before it spread to nearby shops,” a firefighter said.
The Erode municipal corporation also sent water-filled tanker trucks to aid the firefighting operation.
Electricity was cut off in the area to avoid further mishaps. Traffic on the Erode-Sathyamangalam Road was disrupted due to the accident. The Veerappanchatram police have registered a case.
