Early Wednesday, a Syrian national opened fire on the U.S. Embassy in Lebanon, leading to his injury and subsequent arrest by the Lebanese Army. This shocking event underscores the precarious security situation in the region.
Security Guard Wounded in Attack
The Lebanese Army reported that the gunman, whose identity remains undisclosed, initiated the attack near the heavily fortified compound overlooking Beirut. “A security guard was wounded during the attack,” the embassy confirmed, but details about the guard’s injuries are not yet available. Witnesses reported a gunfight lasting nearly half an hour before the attacker was neutralized and taken into custody.
Rapid Response from Security Forces
In response to the small-arms fire near the entrance, Lebanese security forces and the embassy’s security team swiftly intervened. The Lebanese Army stated, “Soldiers deployed in response to the gunfire wounded the attacker, who is now being treated at a hospital.” An anonymous Lebanese security official confirmed that the army’s search of the area suggested the gunman acted alone.
Previous Attacks and Rising Tensions
This incident marks the second time in recent months that the U.S. Embassy in Lebanon has been targeted. In September, another gunman fired on the compound, though no injuries were reported. Additionally, in October, demonstrators clashed with security forces while protesting near the embassy following a deadly explosion at Al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza.
Lebanon’s Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, assured the public that the situation is stable and noted that U.S. Ambassador to Beirut, Lisa A. Johnson, was not present during the shooting.

The U.S. Embassy, currently located in Awkar, a suburb north of central Beirut, is planning to relocate to a new, adjacent site spanning 43 acres. This move will make it one of the largest U.S. diplomatic missions globally. The United States continues to play a significant role in Lebanon, being the largest international donor to its armed forces with over $3 billion in financial assistance since 2006.
