Tirupur: Food safety officials in Tirupur on Tuesday sealed five shops for selling gutka and banned tobacco products. Officials also seized more than 15kg of tobacco products from the shops.
A team led by designated officer of the food safety department B Vijayalalithambigai inspected the shops on Mangalam Road, Thennamapalayam and adjoining localities.The inspection was carried out after food safety officials received complaints that several shops in the city were selling gutka.
Officials found that five shops had hidden gutka and banned tobacco products and were discreetly selling them to the public, including school students. All the shops were sealed and the shop owners were slapped with a penalty of 25,000 each.
Later, police arrested a man identified as Mohamed Farhan, who had supplied the tobacco products to the shops.
