Coimbatore: Officials of the water resources department issued a flood alert for people living along the banks of river Aliyar on Wednesday, as the water level in Aliyar inched closer to its full reservoir level.
This is the second flood alert issued to people living downstream of the Aliyar dam. The earlier alert was issued three days back when the water level touched 110ft as against its full reservoir level of 120ft.
On Wednesday, the water level touched 115ft.There was no reduction in the steady inflow which stood at 3,531 cusecs, resulting in the dam filling up fast. The outflow was maintained at 2,234 cusecs, but the officials said they would discharge more water if the level continued to rise.
Officials pointed out that the dam did not reach its brim last year due to poor rainfall. This year, the intense rainfall in the catchment areas of the dam resulted in the water level increasing from 91ft on July 16 to 110ft on July 20. “Only five more feet is left for the dam to touch if full level. So, we may release water anytime. People should desist from stepping into the river,’’ said an officer.
