New Delhi: Delhi University (DU) has increased the promotion criteria for undergraduate students from 50% to 63% for advancing to the next academic year. Students must now achieve a cumulative score of 63% in their first and second-semester exams to be eligible for promotion, as reported by news agency PTI.
Students involved in sports, extracurricular activities, the National Cadet Corps (NCC), and the National Service Scheme (NSS) may be exempt from this requirement, pending approval from their college’s competent authority.
This change addresses issues with implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) Undergraduate Curriculum Framework (UGCF) 2022 at DU.
“Under the previous passing and promotion rules, a student was eligible for promotion from first year to second year of the course provided he/she cleared 50 per cent of the exams of first and second semesters taken together. The students had to clear seven papers and obtain a total of 22 credits to get promoted,” the official said.
“However, because all papers do not have the same credits under the NEP-UGCF 2022, it is possible that a student can get promoted to a subsequent year on passing just three papers of both the semesters and one general elective with only 36 per cent score,” a member of the committee which formulated the guidelines for the promotion criteria told PTI.
To address the issue, a 12-member committee, including principals from Miranda House, Kirori Mal College, Lady Shri Ram College, and other DU colleges, along with the Dean of Academics and the Controller of Examinations (COE), met on May 7. They reviewed the implementation shortcoming of the NEP-UGCF 2022 and made recommendations, which were approved by DU Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh on May 28.
The committee found that the current implementation was hindering students’ academic progress and undermining NEP 2020 goals. They recommended that students need to achieve 50% overall to qualify for promotion to the next year and suggested increasing the required credits from 22 to 28 for advancement.
