A 35-year-old man from Latur district’s Vangdari village allegedly died over the Maratha reservation issue, Maharashtra minister Chhagan Bhujbal’s office said late at night on Thursday (September 11, 2025).

A suicide note has been found, local OBC leaders from Latur said. The community has now demanded financial aid and a job for the widow of the deceased.

“We have registered a case of accidental death in the matter. But investigation is on. The youth belonged to the Vanjari community. He went to the Manjra river yesterday evening and removed his clothes before jumping into the river. It raises suspicion. We have recovered a note from the pocket of his clothes. We are verifying if it is his handwriting. We are investigating as to why he must have removed his clothes before jumping into the river,” Latur SP Amol Tambe told The Hindu.

“He had three daughters and one son. Since the government had issued a GR on September 2 to issue Kunbi certificates to Marathas, he went into a state of shock. He was worried about what would happen to his children now. So, today, at 5.30 PM, he died by suicide by jumping into Manjra river. A suicide note has been recovered,” Padmakar Waghmare, the city chief of Samata Parishad, told The Hindu from Latur.

In the note recovered from his pocket, it is said that he was ending his life due to the GR issued by the government. “You have deceived the OBC community by issuing a GR against our community. I hope that my community will get justice after my death,” the note accessed by The Hindu stated. Police are still verifying the veracity of the handwritten note.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra OBC leader and Minister Chhagan Bhujbal will travel to Renapur on Friday (September 12, 2025) to meet the family of the deceased.
