Kerala to finalise urban policy at Kochi conclave

Kerala will give shape to its urban policy shortly.

The two-day urban conclave, which will begin at Grand Hyatt Convention Centre, Kochi, on September 12 will give the final form for the State’s urban policy, M.B. Rajesh, Minister for Local Self-Governments, told mediapersons here on Monday.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the conclave on September 12 at 9.30 a.m.

Mr. Rajesh will preside. Manohar Lal Khattar, Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, will be the chief guest.

Union Minister George Kurian, Sri Lankan Minister for Urban Development Anura Karunathilake, Martin Meyar, member of the executive council of public works and infrastructure, South Africa, Ministers K.N. Balagopal, K. Rajan, A.K. Saseendran and P. Rajeeve and Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan will attend.

M. Satheesh Kumar, chairman of the Kerala Urban Policy Commission, and M. Anilkumar, co-chairman and Kochi Mayor, will present the Commission’s report at the conclave.

Deliberations will be held on the 10 themes identified by the Commission.

A high-level political forum of ministers and mayors and the councillors’ assembly, which will see the coming together of all mayors of corporations and chairpersons of municipalities of Kerala, will also be held.

Shombi Sharp, the UN Resident Coordinator for India, will be the chief guest of the valedictory session to be held on September 13 at 4 p.m.

Ministers P. Rajeeve, Mr. Rajesh, Roshi Augustine, K. Krishnankutty and J. Chinchurani and Deputy Leader of the Opposition P. K. Kunhalikutty and Kerala State Planning Board Vice Chairman V. K. Ramachandran will attend.

An exhibition on Kerala’s urban development will be held at Marine Drive from September 11 to 15. Around 1,000 delegates were expected to attend, said Mr. Rajesh.

Mr. Rajeeve, Mr. Anilkumar and GCDA chairperson K. Chandran Pillai and Dr. Adeela Abdulla LSGD Secretary (urban) and Geromic George, Principal Director, LSGD, were among those who attended the press conference.
