Telangana government and Australia’s Deakin University signed a letter of intent (LoI) to advance Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions that address real-world challenges while also unlocking new opportunities for innovation, entrepreneurship and investment.

The University has come forward to establish an AI centre of excellence in the State, IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu’s office said after the LoI was signed in his presence in Hyderabad on Monday (September 8, 2025) by the Vice-Chancellor Iain Martin and Deputy Secretary to the IT Department Bhavesh Mishra.

The collaboration is expected to accelerate adoption of AI across critical sectors and position Telangana as a global hub for responsible and inclusive AI. The focus will be on advanced skilling, AI education and workforce development in the State building a future ready talent pipeline capable of sustaining long term innovation and global competitiveness.

Deakin’s Applied Artificial Intelligence Institute has been at the forefront of multi-sectoral AI research, spanning healthcare, security, manufacturing and advanced technologies, with strong linkages to both industry and academia, the Minister’s office said.

By embedding AI in healthcare, education and governance as well as enabling micro, small, and medium enterprises to leverage emerging technologies, the partnership will demonstrate how technology can directly improve lives and deliver scalable solutions to pressing challenges. The initiative will also open new frontiers for business and investment, thus nurturing entrepreneurship, strengthening startup ecosystems and attracting global capital in Telangana’s digital economy, the Minister’s office said in a release.

“By bringing Deakin’s global research excellence together with Telangana’s innovation ecosystem, we are creating a platform where AI will drive healthcare, education, governance and entrepreneurship,” Mr. Sridhar Babu said. Skilling, data governance and regulation are pillars on which the State’s AI framework is built to ensure “we embrace emerging technologies [and] we do so in a way ethical, inclusive and future ready. The government’s vision is to make Telangana a place where global knowledge meets local innovation and where India takes the lead in building responsible and inclusive AI for the world,” he said.

“We see AI not just as technology but as a transformative tool for equitable growth. Partnering with Deakin University enhances our ability to build global-standard capabilities in AI, deeply embedded in Telangana’s innovation landscape, driving local strengths to fuel India’s global competitiveness,” IT Secretary Sanjay Kumar said.

Mr. Martin said “Deakin is already shaping future-ready graduates through industry-informed programs in AI, cybersecurity and health fields that are in high demand globally.”
