A bike rally was conducted in the city on Sunday to create awareness on the negative impact of drug abuse and the imperatives of staying away from it.
Scores of bikers took part in the rally which was organised by GSS Projects, Maharaja Institute of Technology, Lions International District 317, and other organisations.
Sushrutha Gowda of Shataveri Gopal Gowda Hospital flagged off the rally and expressed concern over the growing menace of drug abuse. Citing reports, he said that the number of youths addicted to drugs was in excess of a couple of crores in the country, and some of the States like Punjab, Haryana, etc., were badly affected.
Drawing attention to the crackdown of an illegal drug manufacturing unit in Mysuru by the police recently, Dr. Gowda said it was a dangerous development and if unchecked, even Karnataka could join the list of affected States.
Calling for harsh punishment for those peddling drugs, Dr. Gowda also suggested amendments to the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 1985 or the NDPS Act.
The rally commenced from Kote Anjaneyaswamy temple and passed through JC Wadiyar Circle, Chamaraja Double Road, Ramaswamy Circle, JLB Road, City Railway Station, Irwin Road, Ashoka Road, and terminated at the starting point.
MLA for Krishnaraja T.S. Srivatsa, former Mayor Sandesh Swamy, and others were present.
