The Eastern Railway’s Sealdah Division has introduced two new air-conditioned local trains from September 5, taking the total number of such services in West Bengal to three. Officials said this marks the first deployment of AC local trains in the State, aimed at offering premium and comfortable travel for daily commuters.

The first AC local in the Sealdah Division, also the State’s first, was launched on August 11 after its inaugural run on August 10.

“These two new EMU services, viz. Ranaghat-Sealdah via Bangaon and Krishnanagar-Sealdah AC EMU locals, will act as a significant step toward modernising suburban travel in the Sealdah Division,” an official statement said on Friday.

Division officials said the new AC rakes have received a positive response, with encouraging occupancy rates.

“This introduction of AC EMU services is a pivotal moment for the Eastern Railway’s Sealdah Division, addressing a long-standing demand for enhanced passenger comfort and improved travel conditions,” the officials added.

Commuters welcomed the move, particularly on the overcrowded Bangaon-Sealdah line.

“We never thought our line could have such facilities. In this hot and humid weather this is a welcome change,” said a passenger during his first ride. He added that the service would help families access affordable and comfortable transport.

A senior official said passengers were willing to pay slightly higher fares for the additional comfort.
