The Meghalaya police have filed a 790-page charge sheet against five persons in the case related to the murder of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi at Sohra on May 23.
Vivek Syiem, the Superintendent of Police of the East Khasi Hills district, said the charge sheet filed in the Sohra Subdivision Court is against Sonam Raghuvanshi, the wife of the deceased, her alleged lover Raj Kushwaha and three hitmen – Akash Singh Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan, and Anand Kurmi.
He said a supplementary charge sheet will be filed against Lokendra Tomar, Ball Ahirwar, and Silome James, who were arrested from three places in Madhya Pradesh for allegedly destroying evidence.
Sonam and Raj, the two prime accused in the murder, have been booked under three sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
“The probe, backed by strong material evidence, revealed that Sonam was in a relationship with Raj. She conspired with him and the three hitmen to murder her husband during their honeymoon trip to Sohra,” Mr Syiem said. “The three assailants carried out the murder in the presence of Sonam,” he said.
Raja and Sonam had reached Shillong on May 21 for their honeymoon, five days before they were reported missing from a homestay in Sohra. The former’s body was found in a deep gorge near the Weisawdong Falls on June 2, after an extensive search by multiple agencies, trekking groups, and locals.
A Special Investigation Team formed by the State police cracked the case within a week and arrested the accused from Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
Meanwhile, the Sohra Civil Subdivision authorities lifted all restrictions at Weisawdong Falls, paving the way for the resumption of tourism activities in the area. The falls had been closed for tourists for two years owing to a territorial dispute between two villages, Laitduh and Umblai.
