CS tells power utilities to focus on hydel power generation

Chief Secretary and Special CS (Energy) K. Vijayanand has directed the power utilities to make full use of hydel power generation during the monsoon to meet the State’s rising energy demand in September.

The demand forecast prepared by A.P. State Load Dispatch Centre indicated that the daily energy requirement during the first week of September would be between 210 and 225 Million Units (MU) with peak demand likely to surpass 10,200 Megawatts.

Reviewing the power supply position from his camp office here virtually on Sunday (August 31), Mr. Vijayanand said that hydel generation, which is currently around 22 Million Units (MU) per day, could increase to about 26 MU with full operational efficiency.

It would play a key role in reducing dependence on costly market purchases while ensuring uninterrupted supply during the agricultural season.

The A.P. Genco’s hydel and thermal stations were expected to contribute more than 100 MU per day, while the Central Generating Stations would add about 35 to 40 MU per day and renewable sources, about 25 to 30 MU per day depending on weather.  In addition, the 326 MU banked in August would serve as a reserve to meet contingencies.

He emphasized that every effort should be made to ensure uninterrupted supply to agriculture, industry and households during the peak agricultural and festive seasons.  Mr. Vijayanand ordered that contingency plans be prepared to meet the likely spurt in demand, and to optimize the power purchase cost and make a prudent use of stored energy.

He instructed officials to strengthen consumer support and grievance redressal mechanisms to ensure reliability of service.

Also, the CS advised the utilities to strengthen monitoring at field level through district-level control rooms, ensure coordination with the agriculture and irrigation departments so that power supply was in alignment with the irrigation requirements, and to improve preparedness in transmission and distribution by keeping transformers, feeders and substations fully functional.

Further, Mr. Vijayanand said the Energy Department would launch the Energy Portfolio Management System (EPMS) app on a pilot basis on September 1. It was aimed at streamlining short-term power procurement and optimizing the power purchase costs. The A.P. Genco officials informed that the hydel generation crossed 2,000 MU by the end of August 2025.

AP-Genco MD K.V.N. Chakradhar Babu, A.P. Transco Joint MD Kirthi Chekuri, directors A.K.V. Bhaskar, J.V. Rao and N.V. Ramana Murthy, A.P. Genco directors M. Sujay Kumar and P. Ashok Kumar Reddy, Chief Engineer Rajendra Prasad and other senior officials took part.
