Salem: Within hours of the murder of an AIADMK functionary at Dadagapatty in the city, Annathanapatty police arrested 10 accused involved in the murder on Thursday.
AIADMK’s Ammapet ward organising secretary M Shanmugam, 58, of Sanjeevarayanpettai, was waylaid by five men on two bikes while he was returning home on a two-wheeler from his real estate office late Wednesday night.The gang hacked Shanmugam to death before fleeing.
“There was personal enmity between Shanmugam and P Sathish Kumar, husband of DMK ward 55 councillor Dhanalakshmi of the Salem municipal corporation, over carrying out some developmental work in the ward,” city police commissioner B Vijayakumari said. Irked over this, Sathish Kumar planned to murder Shanmugam.
Vijayakumari said a team led by DC Mathivanan arrested the accused within four hours of the murder. The accused have been identified as P Sathish Kumar, 44, K Arun Kumar, 28, D Boopathy, 22, M Srinivasa Perumal, 22, S Manimaran, 33, R Murugan, 23, M Babu, 45, R Karuppannan, 31, P Gowtham, 33, and V Naveen, 25. All the accused are from Dadagapatty.
Speaking to reporters after paying homage to the deceased, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami accused the DMK government of failing to maintain law and order in the state. He said the murder was a “well-planned” act. EPS alleged that Shanmugam was killed for trying to stop Satish Kumar’s illegal activities such as selling cannabis and banned lotteries.
