PUNE: Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said here on Wednesday that the Election Commission of India (ECI) was ready “administratively” to conduct simultaneous elections as part of the ‘one nation, one election system’, but it was up to the legislature to take a final call on the matter.
Responding to a query by TOI, Kumar said, “This definitely involves a whole lot of logistics but this is something that the legislatures will have to decide. The decision to hold parliamentary and the state assembly polls at the same time does not fall in the ambit of the ECI. However, we have conveyed to the government that we can handle simultaneous elections administratively.”
Kumar, who was in Pune for the launch of the national-level special summary revision of electoral rolls, said, “Urban apathy in metros is a major concern and this needs to be addressed through public participation.”
Pune city had registered less than 50% voter turnout in the 2019 LS elections and had seen a similarly low turnout in the state assembly polls the same year. This was one of the reasons behind the ECI opting for Pune to launch its special drive.
On the one hand, the effort will be to ensure an inclusive electoral roll, year-round efforts will have to be made by the election officers with participation from citizens to ensure that people participate to exercise their franchise, said the CEC. He said to ensure an error-free electoral roll, all duplicate entries will be deleted.
The country has 2.49 lakh voters aged above 100 and close to 1.8 crore voters aged above 80. The ECI is now focussing on youth voters and those who will turn 18.
