NEW DELHI: The West Bengal Assembly on Thursday saw heated exchanges as chief minister Mamata Banerjee launched an attack on the BJP, while a scuffle led to the injury of the party’s chief whip.“BJP is a party of the corrupt, a party of vote thieves. They are the biggest dacoit party. We saw in Parliament how they used the CISF to harass our MPs,” Banerjee said amid slogans by opposition MLAs. “They are anti-Bengali,” she said. Meanwhile, the BJP chief whip Shankar Ghosh was suspended from the House for the rest of the day for creating a ruckus during a discussion on a government resolution over “atrocities” against Bengali migrants, Speaker Biman Banerjee said. The suspension was announced after BJP legislators began raising slogans as the chief minister was about to speak on the resolution. The BJP MLAs also demanded to know why Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari was suspended on September 2.When Ghosh refused to leave, marshals were called in and he was dragged out of the House. As he was being marshalled out of assembly, Ghosh fainted and was rushed to hospital. The chief minister criticised the BJP legislators for their “unparliamentary conduct”, saying they were trying to disrupt a discussion concerning the rights and safety of Bengali migrants. As the uproar continued, members of both the treasury and opposition benches raised slogans, forcing multiple adjournments of the proceedings.
